PROJECT UPDATE

In early 2020, Council invited the community to provide feedback in relation to a multipurpose sport court proposed to improve the overall user experience within Horseshoe Bay Park and Magnetic Island. Council was looking for feedback on whether to include netball or futsal on the relocated multipurpose court in Horseshoe Bay Park, and the results were so close the decision has been made to include both. The project received 363 visitors to the page with 38 responses that has provided Council guidance in shaping this park, and more importantly future open space parks within our region.

An overview of the feedback informed Council of the following:

  • General support for the multipurpose sport court and proposed equipment
  • Support for investment in the Magnetic Island area

Council has successfully installed the multipurpose sport court and the play space is ready for enjoyment. Photos of the new infrastructure are available in the Images Tab.

Council thanks you for your contribution in developing and improving parks and open spaces within our community.

BACKGROUND

Townsville City Council is improving the existing stormwater drainage between Horseshoe Bay Park and the intersection of Horseshoe Bay Road and Apjohn Street.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Apjohn Street Drainage Improvements work is being undertaken in stages and requires the need to relocate the existing Horseshoe Bay Park multipurpose sport court.

As part of this project, Council plans to:

  • remove the existing tennis and basketball court
  • construct a new hard surface multipurpose sport court
  • reinstate fencing and lighting at the new location.

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

Council values community feedback on all of our projects and invites residents and surrounding visitors of the park to participate in choosing a third sport activity to include in the new multipurpose sport court.

The new multipurpose sport court will accommodate both tennis and basketball, and can include one additional sport, due to the size of the court and line marking requirements. Residents are invited to provide feedback on their preferred option for the third sport, choosing between either:

  • Option A. Netball (with a reversible basketball/netball)
  • Option B. Futsal (soccer played on a hard surface).

This feedback form will be open for public consultation until 5pm Thursday 15 April, 2020.
