Magnetic Island Sewer Strategy - Community Consultation

Consultation has concluded

Townsville City Council has a vision to grow the city, and Magnetic Island represents an important part of that growth. Townsville City Council is committed to investing in improvements for Magnetic Island Residents with a $13.8 million investment in the island in 2021/22.

While the projected growth models for the Island are not excessive, it is important to plan now for the future. We need to understand both the impact that currently exists on our vital infrastructure on the Island, and how this infrastructure will be impacted in years to come.

The Picnic Bay Wastewater Treatment Facility services the southern catchment area of the Island, supporting properties from Arcadia through to Picnic Bay. The facility requires treated effluent to be dispersed by suitable methods that must meet strict environmental approvals.

Currently this is achieved through surface irrigation into designated land areas in Picnic Bay. As the demands on the treatment plant increases, future options for the disposal of treated effluent need to be identified and managed respectfully.

Council has investigated a range of options and wants to share these for the Magnetic Island community to provide feedback. The final solution will take into consideration environmental impact, community sentiment, demand on infrastructure and budget.
