Consultation has concluded, thank you for your time.

PROJECT UPDATE
As part of Townsville City Council's commitment to delivering quality parks and open spaces for our community, the renewal of Magpies Park, Garbutt has been identified as an opportunity for local community groups and the wider public to have their say on aspects of design.

A period of public consultation ran in early 2020, and included online submissions, consultation with Traditional Owners and Local Elders, schools, community groups and sporting associations.

This renewal project received significant face-to-face feedback at multiple on-site consultations and meetings.

Council has successfully installed the playground infrastructure - photos of the park renewal can be found in the Images Tab.

Council thanks you for your valuable contribution to shaping our parks and playgrounds.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION OUTCOMES
As a result of this consultation, the proposed renewal of Magpies Park will allow for the
following considerations:

  • Address safety concerns around lighting and visibility by incorporating automated lighting within the existing picnic shelter and low level park lighting. Additionally, the trees will be selectively pruned to allow more natural light into the back of the park and improve visibility;
  • Address safety concerns around street access by including a park fence. There is a community opportunity to include silhouette artwork on the fence that highlights this is a park for families, for all of the local community;
  • Provide new park name sign with a Garbutt Magpies commemorative plate and pictograms to highlight park facilities and appropriate usage of the park;
  • Raise the profile of the park within the community by incorporating a yarning circle at the front corner to encourage greater usage of the park;
  • Incorporate the existing Garbutt Magpies murals into the new design to give them greater recognition;
  • Provide space for a memorial within the park;
  • New playspace located towards the front of the park to highlight the park's family oriented nature;
  • Provide new litter bin, drinking fountain and paths to access all facilities;
  • Renew garden beds and include local native bush tucker plants; and
  • Complete renewal of the irrigation system.

Council thanks you for your contribution in developing and improving parks and open spaces within our community. Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting shovel-ready project!
