PROJECT UPDATE  (August 2022)

In 2021 Council had received a request to rename Balgal Beach Point Park after the late Mrs Rhonda Coulson. At the Ordinary Council meeting held on 8 December 2021, Council endorsed to undertake community consultation to ascertain the level of community support for the request.

Community consultation was undertaken between 10 March 2022 to 4 April 2022, and Council received a large number of submissions from the residents in the Balgal Beach Rollingstone area.

What was evident from the feedback was two major themes. The first being a desire to retain the existing park name of Balgal Beach Point Park. Secondly, that Mrs Rhonda Coulson has already been commemorated in the community with a memorial seat dedicated to her at the local Mystic Sands Golf Resort.

So, as a result of the public consultation, Council has decided to retain the existing park name, Balgal Beach Point Park. We thank you for your valuable contributions and feedback during the process of this community consultation.

About the project

Townsville City Council has received a community request to rename Balgal Beach Point Park, located at 3 Tooth Street, after the late Mrs Rhonda Coulson who passed away in 2018.

The new proposed name is Rhonda Coulson Memorial Park.

Mrs Coulson was a resident of Balgal Beach for many years and a much-loved teacher at the local Rollingstone State School. She was an active member of the Rollingstone RSL, the Mystic Sands Golf & Country Club and the local Lions Club, regularly volunteering and contributing to her local community.

As per Council's adopted Naming of Parks, Reserves and Park Facilities Policy, requests to rename a park must be formally assessed by Council.

The proposal to rename Balgal Beach Point Park after Rhonda Coulson was presented at the Ordinary Council Meeting held on 8 December 2021. At this meeting, Council agreed for community consultation to be undertaken to determine the local residents' support for the proposal.

Council values community feedback on all our projects and initiatives and invites residents to participate in a survey on the proposal to rename the park Rhonda Coulson Memorial Park.

How can you get involved?

Your feedback can be received by Council by completing the feedback form.

Letters to the residents in the Balgal Beach area have also been sent by Council with hard copies of the survey. If you have received a letter and returned a hardcopy reply-paid to Council, you do not need to complete the online survey.

Consultation will close on this proposal on the 3rd April 2022.
