PROJECT UPDATE

In 2021, Council invited the community to provide feedback in relation to open space improvements proposed to improve the overall user experience within Saunders Beach. The project received 118 visitors to the page, with 24 responses that has provided Council guidance in shaping this park facility, and more importantly future open space parks within our region.

  An overview of the feedback informed Council of the following:

  • General support for the basketball half court facility 
  • Support for investment in the Saunders Beach area

Council has successfully installed the Basketball Half Court infrastructure - photos of the improvements can be found in the Images Tab.

Townsville City Council is committed to providing parks, sporting fields, and recreation areas with facilities that promote and contribute to the health and wellbeing of our city.

Council has received several community requests to improve the surface of the basketball half court adjacent to the Saunders Beach Community Centre, Saunders Beach. 

In response to these requests, Council has committed funds in the current 2021/2022 financial year to undertake some improvement works to the court.

Why is this project necessary?

  • To improve recreational opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy
  • To encourage an active and healthy lifestyle
  • To increase inclusive community facilities within the Saunders Beach suburb.

What does this project include?

As part of this project, Council proposes to:

  • raise the court level to reduce debris collecting on the court surface.
  • provide seating adjacent to the court.

Community Feedback Sought

Additional court improvements are also being considered and will be subject to available funding and community feedback.

Of the additional improvement works considered, what works do you believe are most important? (Rank from 1 – most important to 4 – least significant)

  •  Install a shade sail for sun safety and to increase usage opportunities during summer.
  •  Reorient the court to redirect stray balls away from the car park.
  •  Install a multi-purpose sport backboard to increase the number of activities on offer.
  •  Apply a coloured slip-resistant coating to the court to improve the surface quality and grip.
