Consultation has concluded

Townsville City Council is committed to providing parks, sporting fields, and recreation areas with facilities that promote and contribute to the health and wellbeing of our city.

Council has received several community requests to improve the surface of the basketball half court adjacent to the Saunders Beach Community Centre, Saunders Beach.

In response to these requests, Council has committed funds in the current 2021/2022 financial year to undertake some improvement works to the court.

Why is this project necessary?

  • To improve recreational opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy
  • To encourage an active and healthy lifestyle
  • To increase inclusive community facilities within the Saunders Beach suburb.

What does this project include?

As part of this project, Council proposes to:

  • raise the court level to reduce debris collecting on the court surface.
  • provide seating adjacent to the court.

Community Feedback Sought

Additional court improvements are also being considered and will be subject to available funding and community feedback.

Of the additional improvement works considered, what works do you believe are most important? (Rank from 1 – most important to 4 – least significant)

  • Install a shade sail for sun safety and to increase usage opportunities during summer.
  • Reorient the court to redirect stray balls away from the car park.
  • Install a multi-purpose sport backboard to increase the number of activities on offer.
  • Apply a coloured slip-resistant coating to the court to improve the surface quality and grip.
