PROJECT UPDATE

The Tobruk Memorial Baths on The Strand have re-opened following an $11.3 million redevelopment.

The redeveloped complex included new 50-metre, learn-to-swim and toddler pools as well as an updated filtration system, new shade structures and refurbished facilities.

The project was undertaken by local contractor Jackson+Semler and supported more than 120 jobs.

An additional focus of the project was to enhance access to the facilities for people with disabilities. The new 50-metre and learn-to swim pools include disability ramps and a new disability change room is the first adult change facility of its kind in the region.

Townsville’s much-loved Tobruk Pool has stood proud for almost 70 years and has opened its doors to greats Dawn Fraser and Laurie Lawrence. It is now time that this historic pool receives a much-needed face lift.

Council is investing $11.5 million to restore and reinvigorate the heritage features of the Pool.

The project will restore the heritage features to their former glory. The existing 50m pool and kiddies pool will be removed. A new 50m pool and kiddies pool will be constructed with improved disability access in and around the pools.

The redevelopment will include:

  • New eight lane, 50m pool with wider lanes and wet deck
  • New toddler pool to comply with Royal Life Saving requirements
  • Improved disability access to pools with a disability ramp to the 50m pool and a sloping entrance to the toddler pool
  • Refurbished male and female changerooms for increased privacy
  • Provision of shade awnings to 50m and toddlers pools
  • New landscaping

Construction has commenced with the facility scheduled to reopen to the public in early 2020.
