PROJECT UPDATE (DECEMBER 2023) – WEIR PARK

Thank you for your participation in the public consultation held between Friday 14 January to Monday 14 February 2022, regarding Weir Park in Annandale.

Council’s design team have considered your feedback and accordingly developed a new design for what Weir Park could look like. The new design is set in a new location and includes site improvements to: a) meet the needs of the community; b) address water ponding, mosquitoes and damages from tree roots; and c) enhance the overall accessibility, usability and safety of the park and associated new playground and facilities.

The new design comprises a new playground, new furniture , new paths and retaining walls, and a seating nook.

The playground is relocated to a new position within the park, nestled into a corner of the park with shade from trees. The new location offers an opportunity for expansion of the play area, and ease of access near an existing carpark.

The new playground is fully drained with a provision for an integrated stormwater across the whole site to be addressed in a future project. Existing playground and footpaths will be decommissioned and associated footprints will be naturalised.

Inspired by local flora and Ross River nearby, a ‘Lily Pond’ theme including brightly coloured lillies and lily pad surface, a Megadeck tower and slides, swings, and rocker will be employed.

A works notification will be sent to surrounding and directly affected residents prior to works commencing.

INITIAL CONSULTATION (JANUARY 2022) – Future Opportunities

Townsville City Council is committed to providing parks, sporting fields and recreation areas with facilities that promote and contribute to the health and wellbeing of our city.

To deliver on this commitment, Council plans to renew the open space and community facilities at the below locations:

  • Needletail Way Park, Bohle Plains
  • Lakeside Park, Kirwan
  • Weir Park, Annandale
  • Oak Valley Park, Oak Valley

Why are these renewal projects necessary?

  • To improve recreational opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy
  • To encourage an active and healthy lifestyle
  • To increase inclusive community facilities within the suburbs.

Community Feedback Sought
Council would like to know what facilities you use at these parks and what improvements to the existing facilities you would like to see.

Please keep in mind that Council will allocate a budget for each park that is based on location, size, accessibility, facilities, and proximity to other parks in the neighbourhood.

How can you get involved?
Council invites you to have your say on these projects. Your feedback will contribute to renewing these open spaces and guide decision making for future planning.

A Have Your Say survey will be open for public participation from Friday 14 January to Monday 14 February 2022.
