About the Strategy:

Northern Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (NQROC) is committed to the sustainable management of waste and resource recovery through the development of the NQ Regional Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan (2014-2024). In a combined regional Council focus in regards to policy and legislative changes, as well as emerging best practices, the combined decision was made to establish the North Queensland Waste and Resource Strategy 2020-2030.

NQROC commissioned Arcadis to help develop a new collective regional waste strategy in direct partnership and collaboration of the following local government areas; Townsville City Council, Burdekin Shire Council, Hinchinbrook Shire Council, Charters Towers Regional Council and Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council.

A region-wide focus allowed the opportunity to develop a key Strategy than is more beneficial than a one Council focused strategic approach. Combined volumes of waste can attract greater levels of investment opportunities and more ambitious recovery infrastructure.

The North Queensland Waste and Resource Strategy 2020-2030 takes into consideration a population of approximately 240,000 and covers a land area of 80,036 km².

Key Point:

The Strategy is built around the idea that we need a more rigorous view of each of our waste streams and the opportunity they present to reduce, reuse, repair, recycle and otherwise recover the item of waste. The combined Strategy supports the development of a circular economy that creates jobs, reduces pressure on landfill and the environment, and works towards the Queensland Government's 2050 waste targets.
