Consultation has concluded

PROJECT UPDATE - NOVEMBER 2022

Following extensive consultation with the community on the sorts of activity, services and functions they wanted to see in their local Library, Townsville City Council have designed and are constructing a new fit-for-purpose community-designed space at Riverway. In December of this year, the lease of the current CityLibraries Thuringowa service expires. As planned, CityLibraries Thuringowa service will relocate to the new CityLibraries Riverway, which is expected to open to the public in early 2023. This transition will provide a long-term home for the service as well as deliver a financially sustainable outcome for the decades ahead.

The relocation plan for CityLibraries Thuringowa will see the Thuringowa Library building close on Sunday 27 November 2022.

This will enable the orderly handback of the lease to the owner in order that the new Lessee can move in. In the transition process, it is planned that the community will have access to library items from the Mobile Library. This will be located at the Riverway Precinct every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Friday 2 December 2022.

Townsville’s other CityLibraries branches in Aitkenvale and Flinders Street will be open throughout this transition period offering extended onsite services and programs. CityLibraries Aitkenvale extending opening hours from Monday 7 November 2022 until Tuesday 28 February 2023.

PROJECT UPDATE - MAY 2022

Based off extensive feedback from the community about what is expected from a modern library, the next chapter of the Riverway Lagoon and community precinct will begin in late May as works begin on a new library and community hub.

The new library is set to be completed by mid-December, weather permitting.

Residents will still be able to use Thuringowa Library during the construction of the new library or one of Council’s libraries in Aitkenvale or the city.

Townsville City Council thanks residents and the wider community for their contribution in shaping the future of the Riverway Library. For more information, please see the Media Release and Public Consultation reports in the Document Library.

Townsville City Council is seeking feedback on community sentiment towards opportunities that exist with the upcoming move of the Thuringowa Library to the Riverway precinct. The move encompasses an overhaul of the current Riverway Arts Centre, creating a future focused, mixed-use facility that catalyses new industries, provides safe 24 hour community facilities and provides a space for local businesses to operate and innovate.

This relocation will co-locate a modern and innovative library facility with outside amenities including free public swimming pools, a 'maker-space' and tool library, 24 hour community facilities and safe spaces for at-risk young people, parent and kitchen facilities, recording and sound studios with a focus on podcast facilities and 24 hour digital facilities to support the growing remote workforce.

Residents are invited to Have Your Say on the opportunities associated with this move and provide feedback and opinion on any additional community facilities or services that may be investigated by completing the survey found below.

The Riverway Library public consultation will be open from Friday 25 June to Friday 23 July 2021.

Council thanks you for your contribution in shaping the direction of our exciting new library space! A copy of the Public Consultation Report is available in the document library to the right of this page.
