Rockpool Redevelopment

About the project
Townsville City Council is working towards a preliminary design for the future redevelopment of The Strand Rockpool.
Council will use the design to support future funding applications for the delivery of this project.
Background
The Strand Rockpool is a stinger-resistant seawater pool located at the northern end of The Strand. Initially constructed in 1968, it was repaired after Cyclone Althea in 1971, replacing the original ocean swimming enclosure that existed in the exact location. The 1999 redevelopment of The Strand included the addition of a headland next to the Rockpool that we see today.
The original Rockpool and its surrounding buildings have aged significantly, resulting in increased maintenance costs. Council, with potential funding support from state and federal governments, has an opportunity to revitalise this area of The Strand.
To secure funding and external investment, Council will develop design materials to present to potential stakeholders and advocate for this opportunity.

Purpose and opportunities
The purpose of the Rockpool redevelopment is to:
- Make the area more resilient to significant weather events
- Ensure maintenance is safer and easier
- Improve access to nearby attractions
- Create high-quality open spaces
- Refresh the visual identity of both the Rockpool and The Strand.
There is also an opportunity to investigate options to improve the Rockpool's filtration system to provide clear water. As part of these investigations, possible improvements to the pool may include:
- Modifications, renewal, and upgrades to the pool's substructure
- Looking into chlorinated options
- Adding shade structures within the pool
- Changing the layout to connect better with open spaces
- Meeting current pool safety standards.
How can you get involved?
We invite the community to participate in the survey below to share your feedback, which Council will consider in the design process.
Stage One is open from Saturday 7 June to Saturday 5 July 2025.
Next Steps
Council will review and evaluate all survey responses and feedback. The project team will consider these while adhering to our Townsville City Plan design guidelines and standards. Once complete, we will hold a second round of public consultation on the proposed preliminary design.
Council will continue to update the community as the planning of this project progresses.
