About the Project

Townsville City Council has identified an opportunity to bring a world-class art installation to Magnetic Island and is now seeking community feedback on the identified location in Picnic Bay.

As part of Council's ongoing commitment to supporting tourism on Magnetic Island and activating welcoming public spaces following the successful installation of the 2021 Picnic Bay Mall lighting project, the Smarteez art installation in Picnic Bay serves to further support local businesses by providing an additional attraction to the high-traffic Picnic Bay esplanade.

Artwork Rationale

The Smarteez installation comprises a series of seven spheres made of honed polished Australian granite, and has previously featured at the Riverway Lagoons.

'The Smarteez pop art installation is designed with fun and a sense of play for children and the child envisioned.

In a series of pure sculptural forms carved from Australian granites, seven smooth disks resemble lollies or board game pieces lying scattered. The Smarteez appear as though they were accidentally dropped imbuing the work with kinetic drama'.
