The Queensland Government has developed the Queensland Organics Strategy 2022-2032 to improve the management of domestic and commercial food wastes, garden organics and timber. The Strategy will help meet national commitments to contribute to halving food waste and the amount of organic waste going into landfill by 2030.
This Strategy in conjunction with the Queensland Organics Action Plan supports the enhanced diversion of organics from commercial food premises and the ongoing investigation into the feasibility of options for banning organics from landfill.
Introduction to the Commercial Food Organics Townsville Collection Trial
Boomerang Alliance's Plastic Free Townsville Program, in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Science and in partnership with Townsville City Council is undertaking the commercial organics (food waste/coffee grinds) collection service trial free of charge to selected businesses for up to a 12-week period.
Plastic Free Townsville will support the participating business throughout the trial by providing educational information and collateral necessary to guide your staff and inform your business on the required separation of food waste into dedicated collection bins so the Council can collect the material separately.
Collected material will be turned into high-quality compost for use in local projects instead of ending up in a landfill.
